She picked up a first place and two thirds, almost set a new school record and also provisionally qualified for the state championships in an event she entered at the last minute.

Senior Masaada Johnson led the Wickenburg High School track and field team last weekend in the Arizona Lutheran Academy Invitational at South Mountain High last weekend, where a series of Wranglers posted their personal best performances.

In her specialty event, the 100-meter dash, she finished third in a time of 13.61 seconds; snagged a first place in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet and three quarters of an inch; and came inches away from a school record in the long jump, where she finished third with a mark of 15 feet and 7.25 inches that provisionally qualified her in that event for this year’s state championship meet.

Coach Doug Clementz said her entry in last weekend’s girls long jump was a last-minute decision. She had finished eighth in the 100 and also qualified in the triple jump at last year’s state meet.

A total of 14 teams competed at the invitational, with the Wranglers placing ninth in the boys competition and the Lady Wranglers finishing in seventh place.

While Johnson was busy last weekend (she also led off the girls’ fifth-place finish in the 4-by-100 relay), senior Jackson Tillapaugh’s first-place finish in the boys shot put was overshadowed by the Lady Wranglers’ throwers.

“The guy throwers struggled, but the lady throwers did awesome — with personal bests on every throw,” noted Coach Clementz. “The improvement so far has been bound to come, and it is always hoped it will keep on coming — piling up those PBs.”

In the discus, Emersyn Forbrook (at 57 feet and 8 inches), Alexandra Richter (56-10) and Grace Lopez (54-5) all posted personal bests. Richter also had a personal-best mark of 27 feet and 7 inches to finish eighth in the shot put.

Other notable personal bests were recorded in the boys distance races, where senior Levi Spillane ran an eighth-place time of 2:12 minutes in the 800 meters and senior Braden Ravenscraft finished seventh in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:06 minutes. All three Wranglers in the boys 400 meters — Cody Ballinger, Brooks Jones and Matero Romero — posted personal-best times, as did Jaden Vigueria in the 200 and Ian Haviland in the 100. Forbrook cleared a personal best 4 feet and 4 inches in the girls high jump for a tie for fourth place, while freshman Kaizley Davidson also had a personal-best height of 4-2 for sixth place in the same event.
