While Wickenburg High School’s girls softball team begins its spring season today and this weekend with its annual tournament, three other Wrangler athletic teams start their schedules within the next couple weeks.

Coach Gary Hodgkiss’ baseball team’s first pitch takes place today (Wednesday, Feb. 26) at Coronado High School in Scottsdale.

The Wranglers, who finished last year with a 5-5 record in 3A West Region play and 8-10 on the season, return a handful of regular players from that senior-heavy team. They include sophomore pitcher/shortstop Drake Matney, sophomore outfielder/catcher Calogero “Ro” Dicamillo, junior catcher/shortstop Bryson Alder, and senior outfielder/infielder Tyler Ness.

Others on the roster who saw some limited varsity action last year include sophomore pitcher/first baseman Vinny Lorefice, sophomore third baseman/pitcher Danny Smith and senior second baseman/shortstop Bryce Lindsay.

Matney, an all-region second-team selection, was the second-leading hitter for the Wranglers with his .308 average and also boasted a team-best 1.40 earned run average with five appearances on the mound. Dicamillo (.231), Alder (.195) and Ness (.185) also registered batting averages after playing in at least 14 of the team’s 18 games last year.

After they start at Coronado, the Wranglers will play their home opener at 3:30 p.m. next Wednesday, March 4, against Odyssey Institute and then compete in the Kingman Invitational tournament later in the week.

Coach Dan Doom’s young golf team tees off at its home Wickenburg Country Club course Monday, March 2, against Antelope and River Valley. His Wranglers have only one senior (Wyatt Grantham) on the team.

Then they will compete against several other teams at Paradise Honors High School’s home course at the Falcon Golf Club in Litchfield Park on March 9.

Coach Ronn Tillapaugh’s track and field teams will host at least four other schools in their season openers at home beginning at 3:30 p.m. March 4.

Returnees on the boys team include seniors Mateo Romero (100, 400) and Ian Haviland (100, 200, long jump, triple jump), juniors Carlos Yescas (200, 400) and Cody Ballinger (200, 400) and sophomores Brooks Jones (100, 400), Khan Rausch (100, hurdles), Mason Threewit (high jump, long jump), and Wyatt Sarber (discus, long jump).

Returning to the girls team are senior Grace Lopez (100, 200, shot put, discus), junior Kelsey Hershkowitz (200, 400), and sophomores Brealynn Jackson (shot put, discus), Kaizley Davidson (high jump, long jump, triple jump), Madison Roddy (100, 200, long jump), and Maya Bryant (100, 200, long jump, triple jump).
