After a frustrating year when it had to cancel three of its matches early in its 2019-2020 schedule due to academic eligibility issues, Wickenburg High School’s boys soccer team wrapped up its campaign with its only victory of the season last weekend.
Coach Juan Jimenez’s Wranglers climbed out of last place in the 3A Northwest Region with a 3-1 victory against winless River Valley at the Anderson Auto Group Fieldhouse in Bullhead City.
The triumph left the Wranglers with a 1-7 season record that included a few close calls. For instance, they opened the season with a 2-1 loss to visiting North Phoenix Prep and then came out on the short end of a 3-2 overtime contest to Paradise Honors in their 3A Northwest Region match.
After being shut out by a couple highly ranked region foes, they narrowly missed their first victory of the season in a 2-1 loss against non-region opponent Canyon View. They followed that one, though, with the region win against River Valley.
Wickenburg High’s girls, however, did not fare as well.
The Lady Wranglers came up short of claiming their only victory of the season when they lost a 6-1 match against host River Valley.
The young Lady Wranglers — with a roster consisting of nine freshmen, two sophomores, five juniors and only one senior — finished the 2019-20 season with an 0-10 record.
