After needing to discontinue the season last year due to lack of sufficient participation, Wickenburg High School’s girls soccer team will open a new season with a full roster next week.
With a new coach, Jacob Roddy, the Lady Wranglers are expected to field a roster of 16 players when they host Coolidge in their season-opener at 4 p.m. next Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the high school football field.
Meanwhile, the Wranglers’ boys soccer team will seek its first home victory of the season when it follows the Lady Wranglers’ match with a 6 p.m. face-off against Coolidge.
Coach Juan Jimenez’s team opened its season last week with a 2-1 loss to visiting North Phoenix Preparatory Academy.
Danny Smith scored the Wranglers’ lone goal at the 34:14-minute mark of the first half to give his team the early lead. However, North Phoenix Prep responded with the other two goals with 22:06 and 13:35 minutes remaining in the half. Both teams were shut out in the second half.
Three Wranglers are returning to the team roster from last year’s squad that posted a 10-3-1 record and reached the second round of the 3A Conference state playoffs — defeating Thatcher in the first round, 3-2, before falling to eventual state runner-up Veritas Prep in the quarterfinals.
The three returnees include Arnoldo Garcia, Jose Dominguez and Josue Cortez. The newcomers to the roster include Smith, Pietro Corieco, Alan Cisneros, Joshua Johnson, James Jordan Johnson, Juan Carlos Raizola, Jorge Ybarra, Brian Colima, Aldo Acosta, Edgar Acosta, Aaron Wright-Beeson and goalie Miguel Rodriguez Vargas.
The Wranglers travel to Parker this Friday, Dec. 6 for its first 3A Northwest Region contest before hosting Coolidge next week.
Meanwhile, Wickenburg High School’s girls basketball team will open its season by hosting Camp Verde at 5:30 p.m. this Friday, Dec. 6 in the Wrangler Event Center (formerly known as the Round Gym) in downtown Wickenburg.
