The Wickenburg Elks lodge held its annual basketball hoop shoot Dec. 7 at Vulture Peak Middle School. The hoop shoot is an annual nationwide competition for boys and girls ages 8 -13.

The lodge hoop shoot contestants are determined from the school hoop shoot winners in the three age groups. Boys and girls compete separately. Seven hoop shoots were held in Aguila, Congress, Festival Foothills, Morristown, Hassayampa, VPMS and Wickenburg Christian Academy. A total of 603 students participated. The six school winners in the 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 age groups were eligible for the lodge shoot. There were 29 contestants assisted by 16 volunteers. Lee Morris cooked hot dogs with chips and drinks provided by the Elks for the 175 in attendance.

The six winners are now eligible for the West District Hoop Shoot on Jan. 18, hosted by the Wickenburg Elks at VPMS. Representing the Wickenburg lodge will be 8- and 9-year-olds Mary Bell (Congress) and Damian Smith (Hassayampa); (10-11) Haley Hernandez Traber (Morristown) and Tanner Ervin (Congress); (12-13) Yoami Bool (Aguila) and Dallas Martinez (Aguila).
