Robert (Bob) Young passed away on Aug. 22, 2019. Born in Elyria, Ohio on Sept. 22, 1941, he moved to Phoenix in 1952 and graduated from West High School in 1959. First a rodeo cowboy and then enlisted in the Army, he was stationed in Kenya. Injured with a gunshot wound to the knee, he was relocated to Virginia to heal and complete his enlistment obligation.
Bob returned to Phoenix and began a career as a police officer. It was at this time that he met and married Catherine Coats and had two children, Sean and Shannon. He was hired full-time by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy in 1968. In 1970, he was offered a position in Wickenburg and moved the family to Peaceful Valley Ranch. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Bob also worked as an ambulance attendant and EMT. In 1988, he retired from the MCSO and worked for the Wickenburg Police Department until 1998.
During 1975, Bob was very active in Little League baseball. He had a passion for youth sports and was very involved in his own children’s lives. Continuing to coach until 2005, Bob was always seen at a baseball game or helping run the yearly Wrangler softball tournament with his daughter, Shannon.
Bob loved Wickenburg. He gave his all to those he loved – whether it be a lesson in sports, a talk about life, or just a shoulder to cry on. He was in good company with men who are still here and some who have passed. However, Bob’s true passion overall was his children. They are thankful to him for enabling them to grow up in such a great town at a great time. Additionally, they are grateful for the extended family through friends, sports, and law enforcement.
Bob is survived by his wife Kathy; children Sean and Robin Young, and Shannon and Mike Nelson; grandchildren Joshua Nelson, Gregory Nelson, Kevin Young, Casey Nielsen, Katie Hefner. He was preceded in death by his grandson David Nelson.
