A 400-acre brush fire, started the afternoon of July 7 near Whispering Ranch, was about 50 percent contained as of Monday morning, according to Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management Public Affairs Officer Tiffany Davila.
The Smokehouse Fire was started by a vehicle contacting dry vegetation in the area of 339th Avenue and Painted Wagon Road. The fire quickly spread in the desert wind with telltale smoke visible from Wickenburg and the West Valley. With the help of aircraft, firefighters were able to make headway by Sunday evening, Davila said.
About 130 firefighters from multiple agencies were working the fire on Monday. No structures or infrastructure were threatened, according to Davila.
