I wish to comment regarding Mayor Sickles’ suggestion that the Town consider replacing the police department with a contract with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. While I appreciate the mayor’s desire to utilize limited budget resources more efficiently, as a retired field commander for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, I have serious reservations about depending on any support from a law enforcement agency headquartered miles away from the town. I realize that the Sheriff’s office has a sub-station of sorts here, but their priorities, staffing levels and level of expertise are not determined locally.

Also, from my professional experience working with Sheriff’s departments in other locations and my personal contact with the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office over the years, I feel that they do not have the same level of professionalism nor the community’s goals and interests in mind as do our own police department. I have been very pleased with our police department over the last 18 years: their attitude, response time and willingness to assist our community!
