Three local women walk for cancer

Darlene Amerman, Kim Higgins, and Nicki Frank will walk the Phoenix Breast Cancer 3-Day this month.

Three local women have committed to a 60-mile, three-day walk for breast cancer.

Darlene Amerman, Nicki Frank and Kim Higgins, all local residents, have joined thousands of other breast cancer supporters in preparing for the 2009 Phoenix Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the CureĻ and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. After months of training and fundraising, participants will walk 60 miles during three days to raise awareness and funds for critical research, education and community health programs.

“This is my second year participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day,” said Higgins. She first became aware of the Breast Cancer 3-Day when family members asked her to donate to the cause in 2008.

“I joined the cause last year, to honor my cousin who has been fighting Inflammatory Breast Cancer for five years,” she said.

This year, Higgins is also walking with Wickenburg natives Darlene Amerman and Nicki Frank.

“We have all lost loved ones to cancer and we are just trying to do what we can to help put a stop to this horrible disease,” said Amerman.

Frank will begin the first day of the Phoenix 3-Day on the anniversary date of both her parents’ deaths.

“My daddy passed away Nov. 13 of 2007 from esophageal cancer and my mother passed away on the same day one year later, from emphysema and what was also suspected to be lung cancer. Hearing your loved one is dying from cancer is difficult, and by participating in this walk I feel like I’m fighting back.”

In the U.S. today, there are nearly 2.5 million breast cancer survivors — one in 8 women will be diagnosed during her lifetime.

The Phoenix Breast Cancer 3-Day will start on Friday morning, Nov. 13 and end with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 15. The walkers each raise a minimum of $2,300 and walk an average of 20 miles a day. Hundreds of volunteer crew members support the walkers through the three-day journey providing meals, refreshments and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and 24-hour medical services.
