Swim team competes at State Championships
In what should be considered a successful first season, Wickenburg High School’s swimming teams will wrap up their 2009 campaigns by competing in the 3A/2A/1A State Championships Friday and Saturday (Oct. 16-17) at the Kino Aquatics Center in Mesa.
The Wranglers will send eight girls and six boys into the competition, with at least a couple state titles possible.
Leading the girls will be senior Kellsi Olsen, sophomore Tori Wickham, junior Jesse Root, and sisters Lauren (senior) and Rachel (junior) Preskey. Other “newcomers” to the sport who will join the “veterans” include Ashley Martin, Elizabeth Carrasco and Cheyenne Hershkowitz.
The boys will be led by seniors David Nelson, Michael Kircher, Tyler Wickham and Alex Conly and underclassmen Logan White and Nathan Edwards.
Wickenburg’s girls might be a contender for a team state title, but the new team doesn’t field a diving team. Some of the experienced teams have diving competitors who will pick up team points for their respective teams, so the Lady Wranglers will be swimming at a disadvantage - despite winning most of their eight meets this season. However, individual state championships from the Wrangler squad are possible.
Competition at the Kino Center begins at 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
