Wrangler runners home again after good start

Chase Killer and Criston Hyett lead a string of runners in the early stages of Wickenburg High School’s first cross country meet of the season last week. And they finished in that order, leading the Wranglers to an impressive victory.

Senior Chase Killer led a cluster of teammates that finished in seven of the top 10 positions to lead Wickenburg High School’s cross country team to an impressive victory at home in its first meet of the season last Thursday (Sept. 3).

And in doing so, Killer also edged into the All-Time Top 10 Wickenburg High Cross Country list with his time of 18:48 minutes over the 3.1-mile course at Wickenburg Country Club.

Meanwhile, sophomore Viviana Ruiz won the girls race in 22:28 minutes, but second-place senior Phoebe Blakeley etched herself into the All-Time Top 10 Wickenburg High Girls record-book with her time of 23:15. However, the small field (five) of runners for the Wranglers could manage only a second place in the four-team competition.

Wickenburg’s boys won with 17 points, followed by Valley Christian (51), River Valley (81) and Estrella Foothills (95).

The girls, with 48 points, finished behind Valley Christian (35) but ahead of Estrella Foothills (57) and River Valley (91).

Both Wrangler teams return to action Thursday (Sept. 10) against five visiting teams beginning at 5 p.m. at Wickenburg Country Club. The five visiting teams are Fountain Hills, Arizona Lutheran, Parker, Coolidge and Scottsdale Christian Academy.

Killer also led the Wranglers at the large Padre Invitational in the Phoenix area, but the Wranglers ran only four competitors in the varsity race - thus, no team score. He finished 28th in 17:05 - ahead of teammates Hyett (45th), Levi Staten (51st) and Beto Perez (95th).

Ruiz led the girls in the varsity race with her medal-winning 16th-place finish in 20:23, followed by Blakeley’s 27th place in 21:09.

In the first home meet of the season, the Wrangler field that followed Killer and Hyett in the boys race included Staten (third, 20:27), Brandon Conly (fifth, 21:02); Perez (sixth, 21:08), Adrian Ruiz (seventh, 21:09), Dylan Prevost (10th, 21:36), Justin Bergman (13th, 23:07), Tim Krechel (most improved 15th, 23:47), and Justin Lemon (28th, 27:53).

In the girls race, the trio that followed Ruiz and Blakeley were Taylor Martin (sixth, 27:00), Laura Soto (18th, 32:11) and Vanessa Castro (29th, 34:38).
