Soccer team battles for third
OK, the Yuma Catholic-Antelope match didn’t settle much earlier this week, so Wickenburg High School’s soccer team will battle for third place in the 3A-1A West Region standings when it hosts River Valley Thursday (Jan. 15) at 6 p.m.
The Wranglers, who dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to region co-leader Yuma Catholic last week and then knocked off last-place Estrella Foothills 4-3 Monday (Jan. 12), are tied with River Valley for third place in the region standings - each at 4-2.
Coach Aaron McDowell’s squad will attempt to avenge the earlier 2-0 loss to the Dust Devils that caused the Wranglers to chase co-leaders Yuma Catholic and Antelope, who battled to a 1-1 draw Monday to maintain a share of first place in the standings (each at 4-1-1).
In the loss to Yuma Catholic, the Wranglers battled the perennial state title contender to a scoreless draw through the final 12 minutes of the match. After Yuma scored at the 68:31 mark, Wickenburg’s David Nelson scored on a header off a corner kick with less than four minutes to play. But the Shamrocks salvaged the victory in overtime.
