This Week in Wickenburg History

Al Baum, who has the contract with the town for the construction of the new rodeo arena one mile out Constellation Road, was putting the finishing touches on the judge’s stand last week. The sturdy construction of fences, corrals and chutes at the arena has impressed all who have visited the scene.

Plans completed for landing field (Friday, Jan. 13, 1939)

Under the sponsorship of the Round-Up Club, arrangements have been going forth rapidly the past few days by a committee composed of F.H. Wachter, Tony O’Brien, Edward Wilson and John Perkins for The Wickenburg Landing Field on the Mullen Ranch three miles north of town on Highway 89.

It is felt that such a move is a very important one for Wickenburg, inasmuch as members of the Phoenix Flying Club would visit here while making trips with their student flyers, as well as many others who may reach Wickenburg by plane.

Enrollment in schools up 20 (Friday, Jan. 9, 1959)

When schools opened here last September, 714 pupils were enrolled.

When the schools resumed classes Monday following the holidays, enrollment was 734 - and increase of 20.

An oddity is that the increase of 20 is evenly divided between the high school and two elementary schools.

In the high school, starting enrollment last September was 217. On Monday, it was 227.

In the Wickenburg Elementary School, the enrollment in September was 281; on Monday, it was 287. At MacLennan School, the figure was 213 in September; 220 on Monday.

Chamber plans active role in government, retail trade (Thursday, Jan. 11, 1979)

Efforts to increase retail trade in Wickenburg and involvement in all levels of government affecting the economic stability of the town are two objectives of the current Roundup Club (Chamber of Commerce).

Those two objectives, along with a list of 10 specific programs for the coming year, were adopted last Saturday when the Roundup Club’s “Top Hands” (Board of Directors) met.

Among the 10 specific programs was, “Be involved and aware of issues and commit the Roundup Club to positions of support or opposition when such stands are in the interest of the area economy and the free enterprise system.”

Wal-Mart may be on way to Wickenburg (Thursday, Jan. 12, 1989)

Although the sale of the property on which it would locate is still in a 30-day contingency period, the possibility of a Wal-Mart store opening in Wickenburg appears close at hand.

The property, a two-acre parcel and an adjacent five-acre parcel, is located on West Wickenburg Way on West Whipple Street - the California Highway - west of the Squash Blossom Nursery to Saguaro Drive.

“If all things come together, we’re looking at a closing (of escrow) in March,” reported local Realtor Steve Barnes of the Barnes/Coldwell agency. “However, in a buy of this nature, there’s no guarantee that Wal-Mart is coming at this time.”

Hank’s Trailer Court closing after 65 years (Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999)

Located five miles south of Wickenburg, Hank’s Trailer Court has been providing services to local residents and visitors since 1934. After 65 years, that service will come to an end the first of February.

Wickenburg residents may know the place as Hank’s Antiques, with its large red letters visible from the Phoenix Highway.

Begun as a grocery store, mechanic’s garage, and campground by George Henry and Elsie Brumm in 1933, Hank’s has been operated by their son Omar since the 1950s.

After opening the business as a grocery store and campground, the Brumms turned it into a trailer court and added four wooden cabins before Hank passed away in 1951. They also installed 10-gallon gasoline pumps, which still can be seen in front of the antique shop.
