A special evening of holiday music performed by the Vulture Peak Middle School and the Wickenburg High School band and choir programs will take center stage at the Webb Center this Thursday evening (Dec. 4) at 7 with a special guest appearance by classical pianist Alpin Hong. There is no charge for this concert.
This is the first time that both the band and choir programs will perform on the same evening, with teachers Vicki Sweeney and Matthew Britton working together planning the presentations.
To add to the performance experience for the students, the Webb Center invited the young and gifted touring artist Alpin Hong, to work with the students in their classrooms for a week and then perform on stage with them on Thursday. Hong will also have the opportunity to perform several solo pieces during the concert to dazzle the audience.
Hong’s astonishing ability to connect to people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds shapes his performance style and is the reason he was selected for the residency. His extensive classical training, matched with his background in skateboarding, snowboarding, martial arts, and video games, forms a creative force unmatched in its youthful vivacity and boundless energy. His tireless pursuit to find, inspire, and collaborate with talents in every community results in unforgettably magical presentations that simultaneously expand worlds yet hit close to home.
Alpin Hong is a native of Michigan and made his orchestral debut with the Kalamazoo Symphony at the age of 10. He moved to Los Angeles soon after and garnered competition victories at a young age with wins at the 1989 Stravinsky Piano Competition, the 1993 SYMF Competition and the 1994 Los Angeles Spotlight Awards Competition. His teachers have included Mark Richman and Emilio del Rosario, and he completed his master’s degree as a student of Jerome Lowenthal at The Juilliard School.
“Many children in our community will remember Alpin from Camp Imagination, the two-week summer camp produced by the Webb Center,” stated Cathy Weiss, Director of the Center. “Alpin engaged children in piano courses with amazing results during Camp last summer.”
Ring in the holidays and celebrate the season at the Webb Center with young people sharing their gift of music alongside an inspirational professional artist that will encourage them to keep making music.
