Humane Society to host open house this weekend

A celebration of the early 2009 opening of the Wickenburg Humane Society animal shelter will take place this weekend, and the public is encouraged to attend the festivities.

The “sneak peek” open house will take place on Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 6 and 7) between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. The shelter is located at 4000 Industrial Road in the Wickenburg Business Park and is situated next to Bar S Animal Clinic.

“The Humane Society of Wickenburg’s board of directors welcomes the public to join us for this really proud event,” said Society President Marianne Swanston. “This newly built shelter is a testament to the perseverance, good faith and hard work of our board, but even more importantly to the wonderful and generous donors who believed in us every step of the way.”

The facility was made possible through a variety of small and large donations and a very substantial grant through the Wellik Foundation. The Society has received no assistance through any form of municipal, county, state or federal funding. Swanston said the board wanted the opportunity to thank the community through a “show and tell” tour of the facility.

Refreshments will be provided, and Swanston said admittance in the form of a dog or cat food item will add to the shelter’s food bank. Swanston also spoke about the Society’s holiday angel campaign, which will allow members of the public to make a contribution in exchange for an angel ornament that can be decorated with a pet’s name and picture. The ornaments will be hung on the Christmas tree in the shelter’s lobby.

“In the spirit of the season, we are asking the community to help give our animals a sense of hope and health by becoming their angels,” Swanston said. “We will provide them with shelter, food and water. We will tend to their medical needs and offer a warm sleeping area and lots of love. Their best hope will come through their angels, who will assure them that they will have care and a safe place in their time of need.”

Swanston said those who are interested in earning their “angel wings” can learn more about the campaign during the sneak peek open house.
