After a slow start before pocketing a victory in its season-opener, Wickenburg High School’s girls basketball team will host Maricopa in another pre-region contest Tuesday (Dec. 2).
Tip-off for next week’s home contest is scheduled for 7 p.m., following the 5:30 junior varsity game.
The Lady Wranglers, who scored as many points in the fourth quarter as they did in the first three quarters against visiting Salome last week, eventually claimed a 28-23 triumph in their 2008-09 season opener.
Ninna Bungard, 6-foot-4 senior transfer, led first-year coach James Wiley’s girls with nine points -- almost half of them coming in the comeback fourth quarter with a pair of rebound-and-put-back field goals.
Junior guard Kellsi Olsen was next in scoring for the Lady Wranglers with her eight points. Phoebe Blakeley and Courtney Cole added six and four points, respectively, to contribute to the victory.
The Lady Wranglers scored only seven points in the first half against Salome and trailed the Frogs at the break, 8-7. Then they could only manage another seven points in the third period -- falling behind Salome by four points, 18-14, heading into the final quarter.
That’s when they they shifted gears and matched their three-quarters total in the final eight minutes.
Coach Wiley is taking the reins of the girls basketball program after being hired last spring when previous coach Katie Vaughan accepted a coaching position in Colorado last spring.
Salome 4 4 10 5 -- 23
Wickenburg 5 2 7 14 -- 28
Lady Wrangler scoring -- Bungard 9, Olsen 8,
Blakeley 6, Cole 4, McCracken 1.
