Renaissance singers to perform here

The Royal Renaissance Singers perform a free concert Friday, Dec. 5

Free entertainment for the whole family is on tap at the next Friends of Music concert at the Wickenburg Community Center. Friends of Music is departing from its usual Sunday afternoon schedule to bring the Royal Renaissance Singers at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.

There will be 11 vocalists in the group coming here. Among them will be Jennifer Song, Kathleen Ruhleder, Amanda Kuchinski, Sean Campbell, Brad Rupp, and Mark Fearey. Also coming are Ken Goodenberger, resident tenor and musical director for OperaTunity; Brenda Goodenberger, Ken’s wife and a versatile mezzo-soprano; Jeffrey Stevens, a baritone comfortable with comic roles in opera and musical theatre; and Kathleen Treat, professional singer and teacher of voice and piano at her studio near Surprise, Ariz.

These a capella singers (no instrumental accompaniment) will be clad in rich period costumes and give voice to music from Elizabethan madrigals to the beautiful music of the season. They promise to explain why some of their men are not wearing pants!

Shakespeare sonnets have been set to a jazz beat, and the group will bring to life the remarkable period from Leonardo da Vinci to Henry the Eighth.

The Royal Renaissance Singers started more than 25 years ago at the First Christian Church in Phoenix and grew rapidly with the gift of Renaissance costumes, tapestries, and banners from England. Presentations at resorts, churches, schools, and symphony and concert halls soon followed. The singers are selected by audition and are immersed in the manners and style of the period.

The Royal Renaissance Singers were here for a Friends of Music concert in December of 1995, and they will again bring music, drama, and dance to the Center.

This is another presentation in the Friends of Music’s 35th year of free concerts. Come early to get the best seating.
