Winter sports teams begin this week
With football still going strong from the Fall sports season, Wickenburg High School’s winter programs are gearing up for their 2008-09 season.
And three of the four sports - boys and girls basketball as well as soccer - will have new coaches taking the reins, with wrestling coach Steve Stein returning to handle the wrestling program.
Coach Chuey Gonzales’ boys basketball team will participate in a scrimmage against host San Tan Foothills Thursday (Nov. 20), while Coach Jimmy Wiley had his girls basketball team involved in a scrimmage at Florence Tuesday (Nov. 18).
The boys open their regular season at Maricopa next Tuesday (Nov. 25), while the girls host Salome Monday (Nov. 24). The varsity plays at 6 p.m. after the 4:30 p.m. junior varsity contest.
Soccer (with new coach Aaron McDowell) and wrestling don’t begin competition until the first week of December.
