A-frame signs still not allowed

A request to adopt a new ordinance that would allow businesses to utilize A-frame signage was recently rejected by the Wickenburg Town Council, despite a plea from Real Estate Broker Ben Ruoti.

Ruoti, who was not happy with the council’s 4-2 decision, said that A-frame signs are generally custom made and they would be regulated to town code restrictions.

“In our businesses, an open house sign is professionally manufactured with logos, and we need them.” Ruoti said. “You use similar signs for your campaigns, so this is only fair.”

Ruoti was not the only individual who spoke in favor of the signs, though a number of people spoke against them.

Those who spoke against the signs, including businessmen Bill Green and Will Lockridge, were concerned with clutter on the sidewalks and the town starting to looking messy.

Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce Director Julie Brooks said that after a number of months reviewing A-frame signs, that she would expect the signs to be professional looking.

Vice Mayor Jim Girard and Councilmen John Cook, Scott Stewart and Chris Band were against approving an ordinance that would allow for A-frame signs.

“I am against this totally,” Cook said. “They make towns look junky. We have spent a lot of money to make us look presentable. We have spent money on points-of-interest signs, and maybe we need to update them to help the businesses.”

Stewart said he was afraid that adopting the ordinance would create an enforcement nightmare.

“Pretty soon everyone will be putting them up, and this will not be enforced during the weekends,” Stewart said. “We need to just change the sign ordinance and give businesses larger signs.”

Councilwoman Kristi Henson and Mayor Badowski voted in favor of the A-frame signs, but these votes were not enough for an approval.

The ordinance is expected to be amended in the near future and brought back to the council for further review.
