| Civil Air Patrol cadets enjoy a weekend of experiments at Aguila airport |
This last weekend local residents C/Amn Michael Smith and C/1stLt Heather Smith, along with 34 other Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets from Glendale and Luke squadrons, camped out at Sampley Airport in Aguila, for a rocket and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) field training exercise.
During the weekend, the cadets built four rockets using two different fuels to power them - one fuel was Alka-Seltzer and water, and one was rubber-bands. For the DDR class, they split into four groups. Each group designed and filmed a mini-commercial on why not to use drugs. On Saturday night after the classes, they all played a game of capture the flag out in the desert.
CAP, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was founded on Dec. 1, 1941, as a civilian organization supplementing the exhausted U.S. military in order to spot and sink German U-boats. Since then, CAP has performed various community service tasks and done its part in national disasters. The CAP has three missions: aerospace education, the cadet program, and emergency services. The cadet program is for young people 12 to 21 and gives them an opportunity to get involved with the other two missions and more.
