Historical Society gets Henry’s grave
By Janet DelTufo, Assistant Editor
After submitting to the Town of Wickenburg a bid for $1,000, the Wickenburg Historical Preservation Society will take possession of the Henry Wickenburg gravesite and will proceed in making improvements on the grounds.
Due to a number of purchasing stipulations, only one bid for the property was submitted to the town. The $1,000 bid will cover the town’s administrative transaction costs. Escrow will be opened and the sale of the gravesite to the Historical Society can now proceed.
“We are very happy that this is happening and that within a year of closing escrow we can submit an application to the State and National Historic Registry to have the gravesite designated as a historic place,” said Society President Cindy Thrasher. “We have been working a long time for this, and we hope to obtain some grant funding to help with the necessary improvements to the gravesite.”
There is an APS power pole that that needs to be moved, and other improvements such as resurfacing the walkway and refurbishing the tombs will take place.
Thrasher said she hopes the Society can raise enough money to install security fencing around the gravesite, and she hopes that other organizations will volunteer to manicure the grounds and raise the flag each day.
“I hope we can get community involvement to make this a community cemetery,” Thrasher said.
