Sophomore Viviana Ruiz set a new home course record last week in the Wickenburg High School cross country team’s home finale for the 2008 season.
Ruiz, in winning handily against three other teams Thursday (Oct. 23), eclipsed Kara Peirce’s 2007 course record of 21:38 by 14 seconds - 21:24 on the 3.1-mile course at Wickenburg Country Club.
She led second-place teammate Phoebe Blakeley (24:27) by more than three minutes in helping the Lady Wranglers post an 18-37 margin of victory against Maricopa. Parker and River Valley also participated but didn’t have enough girls to post a team score.
The other Lady Wranglers who participated were Taylor Martin (6th, 27:20), Nancy Coronado (7th, 27:52) and Most Improved Rosa Jimenez (8th, 27:53).
Meanwhile, Wickenburg’s boys - led by winner Levi Staten - handily outpaced the other three teams with 17 points. Maricopa finished second with 50; River Valley was third with 65; and Parker did not post a team score.
Other Wranglers who participated were Bentley Regehr (2nd, 19:21), Shane Martin (3rd, 19:22), Chase Killer (4th, 19:29), Edward Valadez (7th, 20:45), Adrian Ruiz (11th, 21:04), Most Improved Dylan Prevost (12th, 21:05), Austin Zobel (15th, 22:22), Criston Hyett in his debut run (18th, 22:52) and Tim Krechel (27th, 26:02).
Now both the boys and girls teams will compete in the 3A West Regional Championships Friday (Oct. 31) at River Valley. This is the 10th anniversary of the boys’ last regional title, and the girls have enough members this year to also compete for the region crown they won two years ago.
