History plays a part in the 28th Annual Las Senoras de Socorro Home Tour and Holiday Market, to be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9a.m. to 4 p.m., in this beautifully restored home built in 1915 that is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The renovation of this charming two-bedroom home has kept the original design with modern upgrades, such as beautiful hardwood floors, colorful wainscoting, woodwork trim around windows, doors and baseboards, glass ceiling light fixtures, and cedar-lined closets. The vintage look has been preserved in the bathroom with black and white ceramic tiles and a claw-footed bathtub. The back porch has wrap-around glass windows, each with its own lock and key, and was used as a sleeping porch. The spacious yard enclosed by a white picket fence with hand-painted flowers has huge tamarisk trees shading the house in the back and a small rose garden in the front. There is a small workshop in the backyard built to look like a child’s playhouse with a stained glass window in the door.
As a bonus, Home Tour participants are invited to go next door and walk through the last residence of Henry Wickenburg. Dating back to 1903 and also on the National Register of Historic Places, this adobe structure is currently undergoing rehabilitation by the Wickenburg Historical Preservation Society.
Start the Home Tour day with a stop at the Farmer’s Market in the Klein Pavilion at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, then head over to the Holiday Market at the Community Center to purchase gifts, coffee and treats. this year’s Holiday Market offers jewelry, home d/cor and furniture, basketry, art works, clothing and accessories, leather goods, beauty products, and more. Lunch can be purchased for $8 and includes a choice of sandwich, salad, chips, dessert and a drink. Tickets to tour the homes are $20 and may be purchased in advance at the Museum, or on the day of the Tour at the Museum and the Community Center. A ticket includes admission to the Museum that day.
As a highlight to the Home Tour, artist Bruce Aiken will appear in person at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum from 10 a.m. to noon to autograph copies of the new book, “Bruce Aiken’s Grand Canyon: An Intimate Affair,” by Susan Hallsten McGarry. This book includes many of his paintings of the Canyon and a look at his life in the Canyon for more than 30 years.
As an additional treat, Home Tour participants may stop by the Museum for a visit with artist George Molnar of Prescott from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Molnar is well known for his portrayals of Native American life. Molnar’s oil on canvas entitled “Best Friends” will be available for viewing in the Fisher Gallery. Molnar will have signed prints and gicl/es available for sale.
All proceeds from the Home tour support the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. For additional information, call the Home Tour Chairs Monica Lambert 684-3429 or Janie Ruoti 684-8761.
