‘Showstoppers’ live up to act’s name
 |
| Linda Eichberg, Peggy Gohl and Maria Lauren (left to right) “The Showstoppers,” formerly Dean Martin Golddiggers, played to a packed house at the Community Center on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12). The two-hour show featured songs and medleys from the 1970s and 1980s. The finale was a rendition of God Bless America and a tribute to U.S. veterans. |
The Showstoppers proved to be just what their name implies, performing the opening show of the 2008-09 Friends of Music series last Sunday (Oct. 12). The trio gave a picture of old Hollywood and television in their variety show of songs, dance, and humor from not-so-recent entertainment days.
Maria, Linda and Peggy each offered up a mix of solos and a well-balanced blend of harmonies of familiar songs from the past. They were in turn tender, sentimental, and flirty.
Each of the trio shared snippets of Dean Martin trivia. Was that really apple juice Dean was drinking?
They provided tributes to female singers of the past, including Ethel Merman, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, the Andrew Sisters, Barbra Streisand, and the Chordettes. Woven into selected numbers were audience participation segments; four women from the audience were good sports in “Fever.” Then there was 92-year-old Fred who lived it up with “Makin’ Whoopee.”
A full-house audience of more than 270 enjoyed the show. The AIE drawing prizewinners were Noveline Shwen and Mrs. Bauer.
Coming next month is Chrystal Smothers, a charming young violinist. Watch The Sun for details.
