October busy month for Legion
The American Legion Post 12 will host the Sauerkraut Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18, and Operation Jingle Bells is planned for Oct. 25.
The Legion has issued more than 15 Sauerkraut Recipe Contest entry forms with the expectation of more than 20 contestants vying for the $150 first place gift certificate and the $50 second place prize. The first place prize can be exchanged at Safeway for the winner’s choice of merchants. The second place $50 card is for the Family Dollar in-store use only.
Judging of the recipe contest will be by Mayor Ron Badowski and his wife Jackie, Francine Snarey, and owner of Twin Wheels Restaurant Toni Whitney. Snarey, who is of French-Canadian descent, has agreed to take Arija Powell’s place as she has entered a rodeo.
All-you-can-eat Latvian-style sauerkraut and Polish sausage can be had from 2 to 6 p.m. for $10. At 3 p.m., a raffle drawing for a brand-new Kodak C713, 7MP digital camera will take place.
The American Legion will use the proceeds of the Sauerkraut Festival to award a scholarship to a local college-bound student in need of assistance.
On Oct. 25, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary has scheduled the third annual Operation Jingle Bells from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Legion. Proceeds from Operation Jingle Bells will be used to buy Christmas presents, food and clothing for needy children in the Wickenburg area. A band will play while guests enjoy dinner and an auction.
