Cloe to be inducted into newspaper Hall of Fame

The Arizona Newspapers Association (ANA) will induct Publisher of the Wickenburg Sun Kevin Cloe and Arizona pioneer and suffragist Josephine Brawley Hughes into its 2008 Hall of Fame.

The public is invited to a reception honoring this year’s inductees on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University, 555 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix.

Cloe, nominated by Janet DelTufo, has published the Wickenburg Sun for the past 18 years. He has also served on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors and in the Wickenburg Rotary Club, among others. He was the ANA President from 2001 to 2002 and was named publisher of the year in 1993 and 1996 by Brehm Communications, Inc. He has received many awards including the Crown Royal Award, the Special Achievement Award and was selected to be the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1999. His devotion to journalism and to the community is relentless and shows no sign of stopping or slowing down.

Josephine Brawley Hughes (1839-1926) was nominated by Bobbie Jo Buel and Teri Hayt of the Arizona Daily Star. Hughes was one of the first women and first teachers in Arizona. She and her husband Louis took charge of the Weekly Star in 1879 and turned it into Arizona’s first daily newspaper, now the Arizona Daily Star. She was a leader in Arizona and a leader in her industry.

The Arizona Newspapers Hall of Fame was created in 1949 to provide recognition of Arizona newspaper men and women who have made an outstanding contribution to Arizona journalism and their communities.
