Farmers Market comes to town

Beginning this October, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum will host a weekly Farmers Market for local area residents and for those traveling through town.

A place for Arizona farmers and residents to sell their homegrown or homemade edibles, the markets will take place on from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays from Oct. 25 to mid-April at the museum pavilion.

“I think this will be great for the community,” said Museum Director Royce Kardinal. “I think it will boost the downtown area, and it will give travelers a reason to stop and get out of their cars on a Saturday morning.”

Area residents have an opportunity to become vendors at the market. It will cost $35 per event and booth size is eight by eight feet.

Under the farmers market business licensing guidelines, foods are limited to homegrown and prepared products such as produce and related items (jams, jellies, pies), flowers and plants. A vendor who wants to participate at the market who sells other items such as jewelry or other non-farmers market items will need to be licensed separately from the market.

Kardinal said the idea of a farmers market has been discussed for several years by the Wickenburg Destination Task Force as an attractive addition to the downtown area. She said most cities and towns utilize a farmers market, and that these markets provide a service to local area residents.

“It will take us a while to build up to our 30-vendor maximum, but we hope to soon see many of our local farmers here at the market,” Kardinal said. “I also think many residents within walking distance will enjoy taking a stroll on Saturdays to spend some time downtown.”

Anyone who is interested in participating in Wickenburg’s Farmers Market should contact Marshall Marianakis at 928-713-6765. Marianakis is contracted by the museum as the market coordinator.
