A Phoenix man has been booked on three counts of first degree murder after allegedly killing three members of his Wittmann family.
Virgil M. Togstad III, 26, was apparently visiting the home of his parents on Monday (June 23) when he took out a gun and shot his father, mother and brother.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office officials have not yet confirmed the ages of the victims or a motive in the shooting.
Togstad was wanted on two arrest warrants from the City of Surprise for failure to comply and driving with a suspended license, and from the Maricopa County Superior Court on a probation violation.
Records do not show that Togstad has served any time in the Arizona Department of Corrections. However, he was convicted in 2001 on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.
In 2007 Togstad was convicted on a charge of disorderly conduct/domestic violence.
He was ordered to serve three years probation and four months in jail for his 2001 offenses. He was ordered to serve three years probation for his 2007 offense.
Togstad is currently in custody at the Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix, and he has not been granted bond.
His first court appearance is scheduled for July 1. This date will, however, change if he is indicted on the three murder charges prior to July 1.
