Humane Society gets some relief from town
By Janet DelTufo, Assistant Editor
After taking care of locally abandoned pets for nearly three years, the Humane Society of Wickenburg is finally getting some support from the Wickenburg Town Council.
The Council unanimously voted earlier this week to waive the $2,468 building permit fee for the Society’s planned animal shelter, which is expected to be located in the town’s business park.
The Society originally asked that the town waive $21,436 in fees. However, the town could only waive the building permit portion of those fees. The remainder of those fees are impact fees and legally cannot be waived.
In the absence of Society President Marianne Swanston, Vice President John Yznaga addressed the council in regards to waiving the fee for the building permit.
“We are a non-profit organization with a mission to improve the lives of animals, alleviate their suffering and elevate their status in society,” he said “We safeguard, rescue, shelter, heal, adopt and advocate for animals in need, while inspiring community action and compassion on their behalf.”
Yznaga said that the Society hopes to soon begin construction on the town’s first-ever animal shelter. The shelter will function as a full-service Humane Society. Provisions will also be made for the town’s animal control officer to drop off animals during non-business hours.
Information regarding an official groundbreaking is expected to be provided in the near future.
