WCO benefit planned, other projects continue

Wickenburg Cultural Organization (WCO) presents its own local “Dancing with the Stars” for this year’s annual spring fundraiser.

A “Milky Way of Community Stars” will sparkle at this gala event at Rancho de Los Caballeros’ Sonoran Room on Friday, April 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Max Borjon Band will return after rave reviews last year to play the big band sound for dinner, dancing, entertainment and contests. A silent auction will round out the fun with many hot items on the list including a scenic flight around Wickenburg, a romantic stay at a Prescott Hotel and more.

For reservations call Kathy Kelley at the Garcia Little Red Schoolhouse (LRSH), 684-7473 or drop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Proceeds from the event are used for arts programs for children in Wickenburg and the surrounding communities.

WCO has been busy on other fronts. An enthusiastic house welcomed the Air Force Band of the West Concert Band in March. Many thanks were received from both the community and the band for the concert. Town of Wickenburg assisted by providing the Community Center. Members of the Wickenburg High School Band played a lively piece with the band. The award-winning Peoria High School Color Guard presented the colors before the concert and offered to come back and perform for the community. The band has offered to return with one of their other bands such as the Jazz Band.

The A. Wallace Denny Fund pilot program granted to WCO is in full swing at Morristown and Aguila Schools. Students are taking violin lessons with professional instructor Chrystal Smothers through the Phoenix Conservatory of Music. Hopes are the organization will be able to raise enough funds to expand the program to other schools and continue it at pilot schools.

Renovations continue at the LRSH thanks to an additional Wellik Grant. Safety and system issues are being addressed. Town of Wickenburg donated basketball hoops and will soon provide new swing seats for the school house playground.

WCO appreciates the community and its volunteers for making the progress possible and invites interested volunteers in becoming part of the vision to “…enrich the lives of young people through music and the arts and preserve the history of education of the Wickenburg area through the Garcia Little Red Schoolhouse.”
