Carson Thomas of Wickenburg is displaying his miniature saddles at the Phoenix Airport Museum at Sky Harbor Airport in Terminal 3, Level 1, in two cases. The display will run through April 13.
Thomas is a second-generation saddle maker who has studied with the best. His full-sized saddles have always been in great demand. He began making half-scale saddles in the 1970s as sales tools. A small saddle is lighter and easier to transport. He also created the scaled-down saddles to help chronicle the Western Saddle’s evolution.
“A finely crafted saddle has a signature style to it,” stated Thomas, who considers saddle making an art form, like painting or sculpture, “like the art of Frederic Remington or Charles Russell. The finish draws you in.”
Thomas makes his saddles at his studio in Wickenburg, where his miniatures were recently on view at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum.
