Arizona naturalist at Museum’s meeting

Famed Arizona naturalist Pinau Merlin

Pinau Merlin, Arizona’s well-known expert on things that go bump in the desert - day and night - will be in Wickenburg to lead off the Desert Caballeros Western Museum’s Annual Meeting with a lecture on Thursday, Jan. 10 beginning at 5 p.m.

Author of “The Field Guide to Desert Holes,” Merlin is an engaging speaker with a knowledge of Arizona’s desert plants and animals that is as wide and varied as the state itself. She has also written popular books on soaring birds, humming birds and desert tortoises.

“She can literally take you two feet into the desert, and point out 10 different animal homes,” said Kate McCusker, director of marketing, who has been on one of Merlin’s famous “walk and talks.”

Merlin’s talk at the Museum’s Annual Meeting is expected to be lively and is free and open to the public. The talk will focus on the “Secret Lifestyles of the Desert’s Not-So Famous.”

Following Merlin’s lecture, Museum Executive Director Royce Kardinal will report on the Museum’s progress including it being named “2007 - 2008 Museum of the Year.” She will share the Museum’s future plans and will provide an update on the completion of the Charles T. Klein Pavilion now under construction in downtown Wickenburg. The pavilion, being described as a “cultural crossroads,” will house the Flying E Stagecoach and is being underwritten by the Charles T. Freuhauff Foundation and the Wellik Foundation.

Kardinal will also unveil other new Museum projects including the publication of a comprehensive catalogue scheduled for completion in 2010 as part of an upcoming 50th year celebration. The new catalogue, the Museum’s first, is being underwritten by the family of Joel A. and Roberta F. Rogers in memory of Joel A. Rogers.

As part of Pinau Merlin’s visit to Wickenburg, the famed naturalist will offer two “walk and talks,” both of which will be held at the Flying E Ranch. The first, an evening walk entitled “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” will take place Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. A daytime walk, “Holes, Homes & Secrets of the Sonoran,” is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. Fees for the “walk and talks” are $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Early reservations are strongly suggested as Merlin’s appearances are always sellouts.

To sign up for the Merlin lecture and/or the Annual Meeting, or for either of the naturalist’s two scheduled “walk and talks,” call the Museum at 684-2272, ext. 100.
