Prescott has much to offer this holiday season

Prescott has been designated Arizona’s Christmas City, and visiting there during the holidays it’s easy to see why.

Discover unusual, one-of-a-kind gift items. Enjoy the cozy, hometown feeling the Prescott area has to offer. Get in the Christmas spirit by joining holiday revelers in the historic bars and restaurants. Plan a romantic getaway and stay in one of the Prescott area’s charming hotels or B&Bs. Visit the many shops at the Prescott Gateway Mall, northern Arizona’s only regional shopping mall.

Come on up to historic Prescott, Arizona’s Official Christmas City and the state’s first territorial capital, and bask in some of that seasonal glow. The Prescott area has a wide variety of events for the holiday, as well as a great selection of shops to help you with your gift list.

Special holiday events are still underway in Prescott:

Valley of Lights in Prescott Valley - through Dec. 28 A one-mile drive through Prescott Valley’s Fain Park features a huge array of lighted and animated seasonal displays.

The Arizona Revue: “That’s Entertainment!” - Dec. 28 and 29

Adding a dash of holiday spirit to the usual blend of music, comedy and dance in this high-spirited, family-friendly variety show. For tickets, go to www.azrevue.com or call 928-830-7784.

Prescott is home to three of Arizona’s most prized museums. Each one explores western culture and heritage in a unique way that both entertains and educates.

The Phippen Museum, 4701 North Highway 89, features an extensive permanent collection of Western Art from artists such as George Phippen, Joe Beeler, Olaf Weigehorst, Frank Polk, Ernest Chiriacka and more. Throughout the year they feature a number of traveling exhibits and shows. For more information call 928-778-1385 or visit www.phippenartmuseum.org.

The Sharlot Hall Museum, 415 West Gurley, is the crown jewel of history museums in Arizona. The museum is built around the site of the first Territorial Governor’s Mansion, which acts as the center-point for 10 other historic buildings. An extensive collection of artifacts dating beyond Arizona’s early territorial days brings the past to life for visitors. For more information call 928-445-3122 or visit www.sharlot.org.The Smoki Museum, 147 N. Arizona Ave., documents early Native American history of regional tribes through a variety of basketry, pottery, weavings and many other artifacts. For more information call 928-445-1230 or visit www.smokimuseum.org.

A person could spend the entire day hunting for treasures in Prescott area antique stores. Cortez Street, in Prescott’s historic downtown, is an antiquer’s delight. There are stores galore and they are chock full of every item imaginable. Other stores are sprinkled throughout the community within a few blocks of the downtown. When one has prowled through all of the alcoves and corners in the downtown, there are more shops, sheds, and barns in the adjoining communities of Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Dewey and Humboldt. When in Prescott Valley, be sure to visit Arizona Gems and Minerals (928-772-6443) -- a visual feast of beads of every size, shape, material, and dimension.

Browse the downtown and enjoy delightful selections of gourmet foods; gift baskets, dried flowers, antique furniture, beds, bedding, body lotion; bath towels, soaps, platters, and glassware decorative items; lamps, sconces, and rugs as well as fine art and custom picture framing. Bella Home Furnishings, Creative Interiors, Gabriel’s Plum, and Fancy That are great places to browse and shop for unusual home accessories. Lavender’s Blue, Priscilla’s on the Plaza, Seasons, Llama House and Edelweiss are fun boutiques to explore for those wanting great looking, unique clothing, and jewelry.

If it’s local art you’re after, visit the Arts Prescott Gallery or Van Gogh’s Ear. Enter a world of sparkling glass, welded steel, hand-painted shoes, vibrant textiles, ornate jewelry, gorgeous pottery, playful paintings, elegant photographs and much more. The craftsmanship and artistry of these pieces speak to the quality of Prescott’s local talent. For more information, contact Arts Prescott Gallery 928-776-7717 or Van Gogh’s Ear 928-776-1080.

Brimming with color, Sun West Gallery features an exotic mix of handmade furniture, nomadic hand knotted carpets, original art and beautiful home accessories.

Don’t miss Bead It! located in the back of the gallery. This mini-bazaar offers a wonderful selection of beads from around the world. (928-778-1204)
