KJJ Kreations opens in Mecca Specialty Shops

Melissa Cairns (left) and Karen Jones

Karen Jones and several of her family have opened a handmade jewelry and craft shop at 162 East Wickenburg Way in the plaza next to the Mecca Restaurant.

The shop carries jewelry made from several materials including stones, beads, glass, wire, crystal, and pearls. In addition they carry handmade gloves, scarves, candle holders, home accessories, quilts, and crocheted items. For the holiday season they are carrying an assortment of handmade Christmas items and decorations.

Everything in the store was made by storeowner Karen Jones, with only a couple of exceptions. She also has a selection of rare jewelry items purchased from estate sales.

One particular hand-made item available by special order is a beautiful beaded bridal veil offered at approximately one third the price of those available in a bridal shop. All of the hand-made items are guaranteed for life.

Jones came to the Phoenix area in 1981 as a single mother with five children. She now lives in Wittmann where she and her family raise horses and enjoy rural life. She also works in marketing for Remuda Ranch.

“I have been into crafts for over 20 years,” said Jones. “I started quilting and crocheting and then moved into jewelry. I accumulated so much that I needed to sell it and started offering it for sale at Cornerstone Book Shop. It went well there, so I decided to open my own store. What started as a hobby is now a business.”

The business is full time, and will be operated on a shift basis by a variety of family members including her daughter Melissa and both her father and step-father Bob Schede and Ralph Rasmussen.

Jones would like to grow the business and eventually hold craft classes.

“I really do this for the love of the craft,” said Jones. “I would like to increase the space as business expands, and eventually bring more people into the hobby by teaching. This location is great for walk-in tourist traffic, and I think it will allow us to expand.”

KJJ Kreations will hold a grand opening celebration and sale during the weekend of Nov. 23-25 where there will be special pricing and 20 percent off for the first 50 customers who bring in the company’s ad in the Wickenburg Sun. Regular store hours are seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store can be reached at 684-8712.
