Local artist recognized
By Tamara Thomas, Editor
Wickenburg’s own Carson Thomas has achieved national recognition for his hand-made saddles - both full sized and miniature - with several publications recently showcasing his unique art.
Thomas has a seven-page feature in the August issue of “Western Horseman” magazine in their “Cowboy Culture” section. The headline reads “The Saddle Artist” and describes Thomas’ talent and skill in crafting his saddles. Thomas was also written up in “Cowboys and Indians” magazine and a recent edition of “Southwest Art.”
The “Western Horseman” article details how Thomas has been making works of art for more than 30 years, “using leather as his pallet.” He as created saddles for such clients as former president Ronald Reagan and cowboy artist Bill Owen, as well as many others. More recently, he has achieved recognition for his miniature saddles - items designed for collectors.
“It’s taken years,” explained Thomas, “But it’s all worth it. I’m just humbled by the articles - the attention. It’s really a wonderful experience.”
A selection of Thomas’ miniature saddles is on display at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum through the month of August.
