Museum seeking more volunteers

A mid-summer gathering of volunteers and friends of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum will be held Wednesday, July 18 beginning at 5 p.m.

The complimentary wine and cheese party is the museum’s way of both celebrating summer and saying thank you to all of its volunteers and friends. It is also a chance for those interested in either becoming a member or volunteer to see the museum first-hand.

“Please feel free to invite your spouses and friends,” said Museum Volunteer Coordinator Marilu Rix. “And you are especially invited to bring anyone who might like to step in as a volunteer this summer.”

Because the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday throughout the summer, it is in special need of volunteers during those months.

“Even during the summer, we require a minimum of 60 to 70 volunteers a week to monitor in our galleries, work at the admission desk or in the administrative offices, and in the Museum Store,” said Rix.

Rix also noted that summer is the perfect time to try out volunteering at the museum because, although attendance is steady, the pace is slower.

“It is very easy to slip in,” she said.

Those who attend Wednesday’s mid-summer celebration will have the opportunity to also see the museum’s “Cool-lection of Big Guys and Little Saddles.”

The two exhibits include a stellar, permanent collection including the art of Frederic Remington and Charles Russell, along with the miniature saddles of Wickenburg’s own Carson Thomas.

The party will take place in the museum’s “Town Scene” and “Out on the Ranch.”

Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP by calling the museum at 684-2272, extension 100.

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is “Arizona’s Most Western Museum,” serving more than 50,000 visitors a year by preserving and exhibiting the art and history of the Southwest and desert frontier.

The museum’s extraordinary collection includes western art and Native American arts, along with the Hays’ “Spirit of the Cowboy Collection,” one of the most complete collections of Western artifacts on display in the country.

The museum’s entire lower level is devoted to a re-creation of life in Late Territorial Wickenburg, including a street scene; and to a fascinating permanent exhibit called “Out on the Ranch,” which has been especially created with children in mind.

The museum is located at 21 N. Frontier St. in dowmtown Wickenburg.
