Alder, McKeever selected to play in all-star contest
Seniors Jeff Alder and Scott McKeever of Wickenburg High School’s 2006 state runner-up football team have been selected to play for the South squad in the Arizona Coaches Association’s 3A-1A All-Star Game this Friday (June 15) at Surprise Stadium.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., with admission to the game set at $5.
Prior to the game, Wickenburg High Head Coach Norris Vaughan will be recognized as the 3A Coach of the Year.
The game is part of the early summer all-star season for various sports that features the best athletes among the most recent graduates from schools throughout the state.
Alder (linebacker) was selected the 3-A West Region Co-Defensive Player of the Year and the All-State 3A Conference Defensive Player of the Year after the 2006 season, while McKeever earned the 3-A West Region Offensive Player of the Year honor and honorable mention as a fullback on the 3A Conference’s all-state team.
It was a season when the Wranglers reached the state championship game with a 13-0 record against defending champion Coolidge. The 28-21 loss to the Bears in the championship game was Wickenburg’s only setback of the season, which was the first time the Wranglers reached the state football title game since 1979.
During the 2006 season, Alder averaged eight tackles per game from his linebacker position, while McKeever rushed for more than 1,880 yards and scored 26 touchdowns from his fullback position.
Other notable athletes from the 3A conference who were selected to play for the South All-Stars include quarterback Jesse Wheeler (3A Offensive Player of the Year) and running back T.J. White of Coolidge, quarterback Pat Miller of Seton Catholic, running back Chad Lucchino of River Valley and linebacker Cameron Estes of Fountain Hills, who shared the 3A West Defensive Player of the Year honor with Alder.
The 32-player roster consists of 16 representatives from 3A schools, 13 from 2-A, and three from 1-A.
Alder (11) and McKeever (20) will wear their familiar jersey numbers for the all-star contest.
John Estrada from 2-A Hayden High School will serve as the head coach of the South All-Stars, and his assistants will be from Hayden (Estrada’s assistant coach there), Pusch Ridge, Miami, Estrella Foothills and Baboquivari high schools.
