Wranglers produce all North scoring in 4-3 All-Star loss

All-Stars (left to right) Trey Byrd, Tyler Murphy, Coach Ron Bergman, Josh Bergman and Spencer Logan were prominent players in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association 3A-1A All-Star Game at Surprise Stadium Saturday (June 9).

Four players and Coach Ron Bergman showed why Wickenburg High School’s baseball team won the 3-A state championship this spring when they participated in the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association 3A All-Star Game Saturday (June 9) at the Surprise Stadium.

Wickenburg’s four all-stars (seniors Trey Byrd, Josh Bergman, Spencer Logan and Tyler Murphy) contributed to all three of the North’s runs in the 4-3 loss to the South, and Coach Bergman was the designated head coach of the North All-Stars.

Byrd, who caught five innings in the contest, ignited the North’s first rally with a single in the fifth inning. First baseman Josh Bergman followed with another single … and Byrd eventually scored.

Then the combination of Murphy and Logan ignited the North’s second rally in the eighth inning that resulted in two more runs … but not enough to win the game.

On at least a couple occasions throughout the game, three Wranglers were on the field simultaneously. In fact, the South’s last two outs in the top of the ninth inning were recorded as a ground ball to Murphy at second base, who threw to Bergman at first, and a fly ball to center field caught by Logan.

The four Wranglers selected to the all-star game were four of seven senior starters on the state championship squad - the first at Wickenburg High since 1980. The Wranglers finished their 2007 campaign with a 25-3 record. It was the culmination of about eight years of the four playing ball together through youth leagues, junior high school and high school. And Coach Bergman was involved in developing their talents throughout those eight years.

The All-Star Game each year features the top graduated seniors throughout the state from the 2007 season.

Pitcher-outfielder Ryan Guy of Fountain Hills High was named the Most Valuable Player of the annual classic - playing for the victorious South squad.
