Rifle team competes

  

Nick Grey, Sara Bergman and Jaquelyn Holland from the Wickenburg High School High Power Rifle Team competed in the Arizona Junior State High Power Rifle Championship last Saturday (May 19) at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility near Carefree.

The contest was for service rifles as specified in the National Rifle Association High Power Rifle Rule Book, and fired "across the course:" 10 shots in 10 minutes standing at 200 yards; 10 shots sitting from standing with a magazine change in 60 seconds at 200 yards; 10 shots prone from a standing position with magazine change in 70 seconds at 300 yards; and 20 shots prone in 20 minutes from 600 yards.

Coach Rex Powers and the three Wickenburg High School shooters left town before dawn to be on hand for target preparation and competition.

The winning score of 488-14x was fired by Andrew Swazey of Chandler.

Scores and places for the Wickenburg shooters were as follows:

Grey, 8th -- stand 69-0; sit 94-2; prone rapid 93-1; prone 600 173-1; total 429-4.

Bergman, 10th - stand 85-0; sit 84-1; prone rapid 95-3; prone 600 150-4; total 414-4.

Holland, 13th - stand 37-0; sit 64-1; prone rapid 60-0; prone 600 120-0; total 281-1.

Grey received an award as high score for a first-time shooter in the match.
