Kardinal awarded Henry, others honored at dinner
The Town of Wickenburg celebrated its 2007 Appreciation Dinner last Friday evening (May 18) at the Community Center.
Each year the Town of Wickenburg honors those individuals and businesses that have contributed to the betterment of the community with a dinner and award ceremony, with the highlight being the coveted Henry Award given to an outstanding individual in the community.
This year, the Henry Award was presented to Royce Kardinal. Kardinal is currently the director of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and has been past chairman of the board for the museum. She organized the museum's auxiliary, Las Senoras de Socorro, and served as president. Her other accomplishments include being Chamber of Commerce past president, Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year, past chairman of the chamber's Tourism Authority, past president of Arizona Hotel Association, immediate past chairman of the chamber's Transportation Committee. Currently Kardinal serves on the Destination Wickenburg Task Force, is involved with Girl Scouts and Rainbow Girls.
The Economic Impact Award was presented to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum for its show "Cowgirl Up!" with special recognition to Dick and Jenny DeVore for their contributions. Board Chair Jeri Robson accepted the award.
The award for the Best New Commercial Project went to the Wickenburg Country Club with Richard Ringwood accepting.
For Enhancing Community Character, awards were given to Bar 7 - Tom and Bobbie Killer and to Pete Peterson.
The Most Improved Property Award went to Cheryl Miller and the West Haven Apartments.
Individuals who reached a five-, 10- or 20-year anniversary of participating on council, commissions, committees or boards for were awarded with Service Awards. The five-year recipients were Emma Lou Lynch and Stan Watson - Recycling Committee; Dave D'Angio - Parks and Recreation; Julie Richardson and Toni Whitney - Downtown Revitalization; John Yznaga and Royce Kardinal - Transportation Oversight and Task Force; Sandra Hartman - Airport Advisory Commission; Dawn Bender, Rose Oxberger, Lee Morris, Ed Temerowski, Steve McKay, Rick Austin and Tonya Forbrook - Safety Committee.
Slim Rottmayer of the Board of Adjustments and Lon McDermott of the Transportation Oversight and Task Force received 10-year awards.
Ethel Wright received a 20-year award for her participation on the Library Board of Trustees.
Past chamber president Jim Hartman announced the event, and the Town Council helped present the awards.
This year, the Appreciation Dinner was catered by Culinary Visions' Gregory Calloway, and was a sumptuous spread of cherry-infused ham, roast beef, elegant salads, breads, cinnamon-spiced potatoes, and other delectable taste treats. The buffet was set up to please the eye as well as the palate. The appetizers were especially creative, being stir-fried spiced beef or chicken wrapped in fresh warm tortillas. For desert, the chocolate cakes were not only delicious, but beautifully arranged and decorated as well.
