Sports Update: Three state championships for Wickenburg
On Friday night, Wickenburg High School senior Scott McKeever won the Arizona 3A State Championship in the shot put during the state finals for that event at Mesa High School. Then Saturday night, Wickenburg High's girls softball team and baseball team each won their respective state 3A championships. It was the first time in 27 years that Wickenburg claimed state titles in both softball and baseball.
McKeever won the shot put title but had to settle for second place in the discus championships Saturday night, while senior Alex Gallagher placed third in her three distance events in the state finals.
Wickenburg High's softball team won its state title with a 1-0 victory against Show Low in the championship game Saturday evening at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix. The Lady Wranglers had advanced to the championship game after winning a dramatic 6-5 12-inning victory against Seton Catholic in the semifinals.
Wickenburg's boys baseball team on its state title with a 6-3 victory against Holbrook in the championship game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium (spring training home of the Oakland A's). The Wranglers moved into the championship game after surviving a 7-6 contest against Snowflake Friday night in the semifinals.
