Wickenburg hosts high school rodeo this weekend
Wickenburg will again host an Arizona High School Rodeo Association rodeo Saturday and Sunday (April 7-8) at the Everett Bowman Arena on Constellation Road.
Competition for both days is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and will continue to about 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Wickenburg hosted a similar rodeo last year and attracted about 200 high school participants.
Wickenburg will be represented by about a dozen athletes competing in several events, led by two who have earned enough points during the early part of the season to be listed in the top five in their respective events.
Ashley Haller held the No. 2 spot in the state in barrel racing through the month of February - accumulating 62 points through the first six events of the season (but trailing leader Ryen Henderson by 44 points). Haller picked up another 10 points by winning the second day of competition in Buckeye in March.
Jeff Alder held the No. 5 spot in bull riding through February. He added to his 29.5 points with a share of first place (and another 9.5 points) on the first day at Buckeye.
Other Wickenburg competitors who have earned points through the first seven rodeos of the current season include Hailee Hancock (barrels and pole-bending), Tamber Hopkins (breakaway and pole-bending), Kellie Hunt (breakaway and goat-tying), Sierra Rubash (pole-bending), Shayne Leavitt (goat-tying), Luke Leavitt (steer wrestling) and Flint Miller (bareback riding).
