Chocolate, chilies and art cookin' at museum

Now that the holidays are over, it's time for a treat such as cooking classes, art workshops and unique desert adventure tours at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. They are all part of the museum's Life in the New Wild West series beginning now and continuing through the spring.

Warming up the winter series will be a gourmet cooking class with Barbara Fenzl, Phoenix cooking school founder, author and host of the PBS television series “Savor the Southwest.” Fenzl will be in Wickenburg on Saturday, Jan. 27 for her “Marriage of Chocolate and Chilies,” a south-of-the-border take on how to create an entertaining dessert that is sure to spark dinner conversation! Her book, “Seasonal Southwest Cooking,” will also be available, both at the cooking class and at The Museum Store.

Fenzl's class is scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and will be offered in a local gourmet kitchen. Registration for the class is $30 for members and $45 for non-members; and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If taking an art workshop happens to be on the to-do list, Wickenburg's western museum is the place to call this winter. For starters, a new special rate has been established for locals who want to take a watercolor workshop with nationally known artist Mark Kohler February 5 - 9.

Kohler's five-day workshop, “Painting the Cowboy,” will be held at Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg and will include all meals as well as a special evening at a collector's home. The new discounted, local fee for the workshop is $1500.

Kohler, recently featured in Southwest Art and Art-Talk magazines, is an award-winning watercolorist who travels throughout the West compiling photographs of working cowboys he then turns into soulful paintings.

Other two-day art workshops being sponsored by the museum this winter and spring include “Animal Sculpture with Cynthia Rigden” scheduled for Feb. 17 and 18; and “Watercolor with Jane Coleman,” to be held March 2 and 3. The fee for the Rigden workshop is $200 for members/volunteers and $275 for non-members. The fee for Coleman's workskhop is $175 for members/volunteers and $250 for non-members. Both Rigden and Coleman are popular and award-winning teachers.

Beginning Feb. 15, the museum will bring back its equally popular desert adventure tours. These unique back-road tours are designed to take those who ride along both back in time and into the beauty of the desert. They will be led by museum trustee and volunteer Joe Stevens.

The schedule and fees for the museum's desert tours are as follows: “Going for the Gold Mining Adventure Tour” (Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; $75 members/volunteers and $100 non-members); “Desert Ghost Town Adventure Tour” (Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; $75 members/volunteers and $100 non-members); a second “Going for the Gold Mining Adventure Tour” (March 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; $75 members/volunteers and $100 non-members); and a

“Desert Blooms Adventure Tour” (April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon;

$50 members/volunteers and $75 non-members).

All proceeds go to benefit the museum, and early signups are encouraged by calling 684-2272, ext. 100. Additional information about museum classes, workshops, tours and events can also be found on the museum's website at www.westernmuseum.org
