Local cowboy finishes sixth at NFR; ninth for season

Bareback rider Tom McFarland of Wickenburg won the eighth round and finished second in the ninth round last week in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas - eventually claiming sixth overall in the event and ninth for the season.
McFarland completed all 10 rides in the NFR competition, with an average score of 791.5. With a third-place in Round Three, sixth place in Round Seven; first in eighth; and second in ninth, the 23-year-old Wickenburg cowboy picked up more than $46,000 in the 10-day event.
For the season, McFarland's ninth-place finish in the bareback standings earned him more than $110,000.
He scored the following points in the 10-round NFR event: 71.5 in Round One; 75.5 in Two; 83.5 in Three; 79.6 in Four; 82.5 in Five; 77.5 in Six; 82.0 in Seven; 82.5 in Eight; 81.0 in Nine; and 76.0 in the final round.
McFarland, who also competes in saddle bronc riding, joined the PRCA in 2001 and had previously qualified for the NFR in 2003 and 2004. He finished 18th last year in the PRCA bareback competition - earning $59,773.
His career earnings prior to this year's NFR are $286,428.
In 2006, McFarland won in four rodeo events and shared the title in three other rodeos.
The 23-year-old cowboy, who was born in Prescott, and his wife Ashley have two daughters. His parents Mike and Billie McFarland live in Wittmann.
