Humane Society land in question
By Janet DelTufo, Assistant Editor
Several more steps need to be taken before the Humane Society of Wickenburg can begin to think about leasing a piece of town-owned property near Wickenburg's wastewater treatment facility.
Two key obstacles stand in the way of securing one acre of property in an area containing 26 acres owned by the town. There is access to the location; however that access is through a private road owned by the Simpson family. Arrangements granting the Society access to the property have not been made.
Society representatives hope to meet with the Simpson family after they receive building plans from an architect working on a kennel structure.
A 4,000 square foot building that would contain soundproofing and security is being proposed. The one-acre site selected by Councilman John Cook is more than 1,000 feet from the nearest single-family residence and 600 feet from a trailer park north of the site. The Wickenburg planning department said this should be a sufficient distance to avoid any noise nuisance.
If an arrangement can be worked out to provide access to the property, the Society faces another challenge from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad.
The railroad would need to be notified of the proposed increase in traffic, and a crossing arm at the location might have to be installed. The Society is in the process of making arrangements to meet with railroad officials.
