Council supports Humane Society

The Wickenburg Town Council voted earlier this week to support the Humane Society of Wickenburg (HSOW) in its request to lease a piece of town-owned property in order to build a permanent shelter.

Members of the town staff will begin to look for a suitable location for a shelter, perhaps in the airport or industrial park areas.

Several individuals were in attendance to lend support to the cause, and Mayor Ron Badowski read three letters into the record. One of the letters questioned why the town would help fund the organization, when the town struggled with approving additional funding for elderly transportation earlier in the year.

Badowski made it clear that the Humane Society was not looking for financial support. He said the organization was only requesting that the town lease it property at an affordable price. The town leases properties to other non-profit organizations in Wickenburg for a small yearly fee, such as the Wickenburg Soroptimists and the Senior Respite Center.

The Humane Society of Wickenburg is a 50(c)3 non-profit organization. It is solely funded by public donations and grants, and it does not receive any funding from the Humane Society of Arizona or the Humane Society of the United States.

HSOW representatives Natalee Rallo and Debi Main addressed the council and said they were hoping to construct a 3,000- to 4,000-foot steel structure and a horse corral.
