Fiesta de Septiembre coming soon
By Julie Brooks, Special to The Sun
The Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its 17th annual Fiesta de Septiembre, on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The colorful event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., indoors & outside of the Wickenburg Community Center, 160 North Valentine St., in the heart of downtown. The event recognizes the town's early Hispanic pioneers, and kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month in Arizona.
Events scheduled during the fiesta include special Hispanic families photography exhibit, entertainment throughout the day with two mariachi bands - Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix and Mariachi Alegre, Folklorico dance troupes- Ballet Folklorico de Santa Maria, Ballet Foklorico Corazon de Mexico and music by Phoenix's own "Barrio Latino".
Outdoors you'll find a mercado with arts & crafts and food booths, offering a variety of merchandise and tasty food.
The margarita & cerveza cantina will have delicious drinks served by the Knights of Columbus throughout the day.
The "Kids Zona" program is scheduled twice during the day, where children learn how to make Mexican crafts, in addition to Hispanic heritage stories being told by storytellers.
Special activities planned for the day include the Viva Margarita! Contest, where contestants concoct their favorite drink - traditional or exotic, on the rocks or frozen.
One of the highlights during the day is the annual salsa contest, where contestants create their favorite salsa recipes for prizes, including the coveted "People's Choice Award" (hot, hot, hot! - muy caliente!).
Wickenburg founded in 1863 is the oldest town north of Tucson, and known for its rich ranching and mining history.
